Date: Oct 2, 2023

By: Kay Arnal

Welcome to Mosh Media WPG!

You’re reading the first blog post. Thank you. Here, we will discuss what we do, why we do it, and how this website will benefit you.

We go by Mosh Media WPG, Mosh Media Winnipeg, and Mosh Media.

What Is Mosh Media WPG?

Mosh Media WPG brings you weekly updates on Winnipeg's rock and alternative music scene. Whether you're in a local band, a fan of their music, or new, we are dedicated to providing you with fresh stories. From artist spotlights to newalbum releases to upcoming shows, Mosh Media will help you expand your musical horizons.

Why Write Only About Local Bands?

While I love popular bands, the media often underrepresents smaller bands. However, local bands can be just as talented as the popular bands we listen to. That is why I will look for current small bands that one day have the potential to headline a tour.

I also want to create a place where these musicians feel represented and where people in the community can find shows to help them connect and find self-expression.

What Content Are We Going to Cover?

  • Song, album, and concert reviews personalized just for you.

  • In-depth interviews with local artists and promoters.

  • A bi-monthly live event calendar showing upcoming shows from our favourite local artists.

We prioritize providing you with a stress-free, cost-free, and convenient way to stay informed about weekly news on the Winnipeg rock music scene.

My Story

My name is Kay. I am the creator and editor of Mosh Media WPG. Growing up, I have always loved rock music because of my mom, who spent twenty years living in Los Angeles.

In L.A., she spent most of her time working in bars frequented by famous musicians like Slash and Gene Simmons. She attended music school to play bass guitar. She spent her downtime hanging out with friends in the rock music community or playing in her band, Heinous Crimes.

At nine-years-old, my mom took me to my first concert. That concert was KISS. Since then, we have always gone to shows together. I have seen sixty-two of my favourite bands perform, not including the local bands I support.

I’ve travelled by road and plane to get to these shows. I even travelled to a show during a tornado. I guess you could say I enjoy live music. I go because I love the atmosphere and the community around this music.

I’ve met some of the nicest people at shows, some of whom I call my close friends. Concerts allow many people to express themselves and explore their individuality. It’s a place to build lasting relationships and meaningful memories.

When I was younger, I followed in my mom’s footsteps and picked up a few instruments. I learned percussion, piano, and singing. I joined the band in the air cadet program in high school for four years, eventually becoming band leader. But playing wasn’t my passion. My passion is telling stories through written words and photographs.

In high school, I wrote an article about how punk music shapes our world, and from that article, I knew I needed to continue writing about the effects the music industry has on our society.

So, I joined Creative Communication at Red River College Polytechnic, where I developed skills in journalism, media production, advertising, public relations, photography, digital media design and publication.

I've since put down the instruments but have never stopped listening to music and attending shows. Instead, I photograph and write to self-expression through art and share my love of music with the community.

With all those skills developed, I can now use them on this website to help others see how rock music shapes our thinking, feeling, and connecting.
